Another story I read about this was that the studio was facing financial troubles after Disney bought out Fox and they decided to just shut down.

I was under the impression Fox owned them and therefore they were now owned by Disney by default.

Maybe. I knew that a lot of the FX companies were hired by the studios once they started shutting down their own in-house FX divisions which is why there are so many different companies listed on credits.
