It’s suddenly occurred to me (as most sudden occurances do) the internet has become almost invisible to most people now.
Here at InsanityDaily HQ, the internet is front and centre. But, in I would say the majority of homes, this just is not the case anymore.
As I know I have said before, people started to think laptops could do everything a PC can, then started thinking a tablet could do everything a laptop can, and we’ve finally ended up with most people thinking a phone can do everything anything else can. I know I’ve also said previously that internet on a phone was, is, and always will be a half-arsed attempt at being internet.
What I’m leading up to saying here is that it just blows my mind the astronomical prices people are happy to fork out every month on all those “blistering fibre optic internet speeds”, when they are barely using the internet. Oh sure they’re streaming 50 shows every day on Netflix. But that isn’t using the internet – that’s using Netflix. They’ll of course also use it to update the firmware on their telly, and ohh, maybe book that holiday on that pathetic 13″ screen on their Apple laptop (sorry to break it to you, and shatter the magic, but yes, it’s just a laptop).
So there it sits, being completely ignored for probably 95% of the time, and yet these bozos are forking out often £50 a month for “speed”. Speed for what???!! Once your “buffering” message and “loading” are gone, what are you using the extra for? You’re not doing anything WITH it. You’re just using it as a facilitator – not the internet itself.
I really worry it’s just being relegated to the background, not being utilised properly as the neverending stream of information that it can be. People don’t get the internet these days thinking “oh great now I can look stuff up and talk to people and join forums!”. People get the internet these days thinking “now I can watch Stranger Things!”.
And that…is fucking PITIFUL.
