One of my most amusing recent memories of friendship gone wrong on Interpals was this 20 year old in America who studied anthropology – and thus of course thought she knew everything about the world and other cultures. So imagine my amusement (okay a sense of immense smugness) when I found myself explaining to her that when we say “fags” in England we aren’t referring to anyone’s sexual preference.
