“Bill targets all the things that no one would disagree are bad……in our headline”.
When you watch the interview with Nadine Dorries, the minister responsible though, as I just did, you find out that they’re looking to extend this to the online streaming services like Netflix, so that no mean jokes may be heard without consequence – she referred to the current wailing about Jimmy Carr’s reference to pikeys (which even she mentioned he actually said a year ago – so more historical scrabbling around to find something to be offended by).
But to the “Online Safety Bill”, she confirmed that yes, they WILL be looking to stop companies like Facebook doing what they want on their own platform. That in itself isn’t much to be concerned about. Except she said “companies like”. Which could just as easily mean WordPress. com. Meaning I can’t even PAY to say whatever I want to anymore. Which, in turn, means free speech is alarmingly under threat. How long before the trickle down? And hosts like WordPress put in a pre-emptive caveat to the effect of “oh yeah, say what ever you like, but as long as it’s just nice things, yeah?”.
Jesus fucking christ…I’ve said this before, I DO NOT WANT TO LIVE in a world where everyone is nice. It would be hell on earth. That’s the highly compressed version of what I’ve already said. Look up the rest.
